I have never been on a cruise, but something like this would be the only time I would consider it. Maybe someday. I would definitely play scrabble with you. I would also likely lose, but that would be fine with me. Thanks for making this newsletter and your podcast, and your books, and all the interesting things you do. Also, please unsubscribe Susan. She’s bored.
I don't have cruising high on my agenda, but if I did and if I had signed up with HODGMAN24, I would find it incredibly intimidating to play scrabble with you. I once went on a first date with someone who got 3 7-letter scrabble words in a row and I never went out with him again.
My second cruise ever was JoCo 2023, and I knew I couldn't swing it this year. I am comforting myself that I will eventually see video from the cruise of you and Jonathan. I discovered both of you at about the same time.
I have taken two cruises in my life. One was a Caribbean cruise with a group of college friends, and I would have taken my wife with me but she was not my wife at that time. But I began to realize that she might one day become my wife when she met us deplaning at the airport (you could do that in those days).
The second cruise was in celebration of my mother's 80th birthday, when she took all her children and grandchildren to Alaska. By that time my girlfriend had been my wife for fifteen years or so.
As far as I am aware, neither you nor Jonathan Coulton were present on these cruises. Probably not Josh Gondelman either. And I did not play Scrabble on either cruise, although I believe I played Bananagrams on the Alaska cruise.
I looked into it, but just couldn't swing the cost of such an extravagant cruise. I've done a few from Los Angeles - Sometimes you can get down the "Mexican Riviera" where the Love Boat used to go for as little as $100-200/day - and I love the Cruise life, even without scrabble and Ukulele pits, which sound like a dream. Do they still fold your towels into different animal shapes in the evening? Bliss.
I'm glad you're having a (mostly?) good time. I've never been on a cruise ship as a passenger, but I worked as a pastry chef on a Norwegian ship in Hawaii for a time. It was ... interesting. I would love to set sail with a nerdy compliment of (mostly?) wonderful folks someday. Maybe next year? [He says as he stares into the middle distance]
I have never been on a cruise and don’t think I ever will, but the thought of playing scrabble with you is ENTICING! If JC ever sets up the JC tall ship excursion, I’m there!
Hoping to go next year and hoping you will be there, it would be the gathering of Johns.
Now that you have multiple formats for Judge John Hodgman, I was wondering which you and Jesse prefer us to use, I’m listening/watching no matter what so I figured I should do it in your preferred way (currently I’m listening through pocket casts)

Thank you. I unsubscribed Susan.

Trust me, I'm not that good at it.
Do not believe this!
Yay!
My first cruise ever was JoCo 2020, and, well…

Sorry to miss you but trust me: I get it

Tho I consider Bananagrams to be an abomination I am glad you had nice times

Yours in leisure,
Mark
There is some towel folding tho I confess I am not sure what animals they are supposed to be. More like towel mounding

They Might Be Giants will be there next year!
I’m going next year! I hope you’ll be there too.
I am not sure yet!

Mr. Hodgman are you aware that whistling while at sea is thought to be bad luck?
We are currently docked tho.
Oh then you are good.

It was a pleasure chatting with you on the boat, and thanks for the shoutout! We’ll tell Parsnip you say hello.
If you get sick of that tune they’re whistling, perhaps they’d know, or you could teach them,

Or, less whistling but super great.
